Replacing aging essential equipment with advanced new technology

Anesthesia machines deliver anesthesia to keep a patient unconscious and comfortable during surgery. They also support the patient’s breathing and provide the vital information that helps anesthesiologists adjust their care and respond to changes within seconds.

Anesthesia care supported thousands of procedures at PRHC last year alone. But after 13 years of continuous use, the anesthesia machines are nearing the end of their lifespan. Each must pass a thorough safety check every day and increasingly, the machines have to be pulled from service.

If too few machines are working, an operating room may not open, and surgeries will be delayed. New machines are needed not only to keep our operating rooms running, but to bring greater precision and more personalized anesthesia care to every patient. Technology has advanced a lot since our current machines entered service and to help bridge that gap, we’ve added a small number of separate devices that provide additional monitoring capabilities. This information helps anesthesiologists adjust their anesthesia and breathing support throughout the operation.

Because there are only a few of these monitoring devices at PRHC, they’re prioritized for patients with the most complex needs. New anesthesia machines would have these capabilities built in, giving every patient access to advanced monitoring in every operating room. This matters more than ever, because more patients are coming to PRHC for surgery who are older and living with complex health conditions. With better information, PRHC’s anesthesiologists will be able to respond sooner and tailor each patient’s care more carefully.
