An investment in the future of cancer care

PRHC provides innovative, individualized and compassionate services across the spectrum of cancer care – including screening, diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship/palliative care.

The Health Centre serves a regional area of 600,000 people and the number of cancer patients doctors, nurses and staff see at PRHC has grown significantly. Last year alone, there were over 23,000 patient visits to the Cancer Clinic.

The rising volumes of cancer patients are expected to have a significant impact on services, including surgical, diagnostic imaging and laboratory. PRHC now provides laboratory services for surgical pathology for testing for five smaller partner hospitals. These laboratory pathology services are essential to PRHC’s (and our partner hospitals’) ability to provide timely, accurate cancer diagnosis, staging and treatment.

At the same time, there is a system-wide shortage of pathologists, with more pathologists retiring than entering the field.

If patients need pathology more than ever, the time for innovation is now. PRHC is committed to bringing digital pathology – the future of laboratory diagnostics – to our region. Digital pathology involves acquisition of pathology information through high-resolution digital “slides”: images that can be shared, managed and interpreted on a computer screen or mobile device. It has many benefits, including:

  • Improved analysis and rapid access
  • Reduced errors and improved accuracy
  • Better, multiple angle views
  • Improved workflow
  • Reduced turnaround times
  • Better opportunities for collaboration and innovation

It will keep innovative, individualized and compassionate cancer care close to home. And we need your help to make this vital investment possible.

You can make a donation online, or for more information, please call 705-876-5000.

There are more and more people being diagnosed with cancer every year. It’s up to us to ensure the technology is here so they can be treated close to home like I was, rather than travelling far from the people they love at one of the worst times in their life.
