Transforming pediatric cancer care at PRHC
Childhood cancers are on the rise and PRHC is seeing the effects.
PRHC’s pediatric cancer care program supports the greater region of Peterborough City and County, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County, eastern portions of the Region of Durham, and the Haliburton Highlands. Last year there were 605 pediatric cancer patient visits to the hospital by an average of 22 patients. This represents a 35% increase over the past four years.
With increasing patient volumes and concerns about the rise of infectious diseases – especially for vulnerable pediatric patients – the current location of PRHC’s pediatric cancer services is no longer appropriate and isn’t large enough for its purpose.
So, with donor support, the PRHC Foundation is committed to funding a brand new, dedicated pediatric cancer care clinic space. It will include the construction and equipping of specially-built consultation, treatment and meeting rooms that are designed to:
- Keep vulnerable patients safe from cross infection
- Accommodate larger, collaborative care teams
- Fit families who may have to bring additional children with them
Without this additional space, children with cancer and their families will have to face the additional burden of travel for treatment and tests that can expertly and efficiently be delivered right here. A family’s ability to access expert care for a child with cancer shouldn’t be affected by circumstance, whether it be where they live, how much family support they have, or their financial circumstances. You can help lessen the burden for these families.
