Revolutionizing vascular care at PRHC with a hybrid operating room
A state-of-the-art hybrid operating room combines the strengths of a classic operating room and an interventional radiology suite. There, specialized clinical teams can perform multiple open and minimally invasive operations on the same patients, on the same day, in the same room. Revolutionizing vascular care, this investment will result in safer and more seamless, comfortable and cost-effective care, with better patient outcomes: less pain and complications, shorter hospital stays and rehabilitation – ideal for frail vascular patients.
Bringing a hybrid OR to PRHC is one of the most exciting investments in innovation in the hospital’s recent history. Taking us to the frontiers of minimally invasive surgical care, a new hybrid OR will empower PRHC’s vascular surgeons to provide lifesaving treatment to patients with multiple, complex, and challenging vascular conditions. Traditionally, if a patient were to have that kind of care in a non-hybrid OR setting, they would have one procedure, recover, have the second procedure, recover – extending the length of treatment longer than necessary.
PRHC’s regional vascular program currently serves a population greater than 600,000 people with patients coming from Peterborough City and County, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County (and beyond to Belleville), the Haliburton Highlands and the Region of Durham (including Whitby and Ajax). There are four vascular surgeons at PRHC who perform more than 1,000 vascular surgeries a year in two dedicated operating rooms – they’re serving patient volumes equivalent to six or seven vascular surgeons. The suites they work in have reached the end of their lifespan and the image quality of the available diagnostic tools limits the range of procedures performed.
Instead, the hybrid OR will allow very sick patients to receive the care they need, closer to home and without delays that could be life-threatening. The hybrid OR will support experts in saving life and limb, avoiding a stroke or aneurysm rupture.
The new operating suite will be the most technologically advanced operating room in the region, featuring conventional surgical equipment and state-of-the-art diagnostic tools. The large space will also allow for the integration of the technology and multidisciplinary specialists, and give those medical teams access to diagnostic imaging right in the room, eliminating the need for patient transfers and helping to reduce the risk of infection.
