Some patients can’t wait for a second surgery…and they shouldn’t have to

Did you know your vascular system is one of the most important systems in the body? It’s a crucial network that includes the arteries, veins and lymph nodes, from head to toe. It supports the flow of nutrients to every organ and muscle. And when it fails, the consequences can be life-threatening.

Vascular disease is the leading cause of preventable death and disability in Canada.

Peterborough Regional Health Centre’s regional vascular program currently serves a population greater than 600,000 people with patients coming from Peterborough City and County, City of Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland County and beyond to Belleville, the Haliburton Highlands and the Region of Durham including Whitby and Ajax.

PRHC’s operating rooms are 16 years old and don’t support hybrid surgical care. Vascular patients who need multiple surgeries must undergo each one separately. It’s time-consuming, risky and it delays healing.

A hybrid OR will change that. This advanced operating suite allows specialists to perform imaging, minimally invasive procedures, and open surgery—on one patient, in one room, on the same day. That means fewer procedures, safer outcomes, and faster recovery for patients.

But here’s the reality: the government doesn’t fund hospital equipment. It’s donors who will make possible a new $6 million hybrid OR at PRHC.

In this powerful video, PRHC vascular surgeon Dr. Heather Cox explains the need for a hybrid operating room at the Health Centre—and how it will transform care for thousands of patients in our region…
