“At a time when there’s been a lot of uncertainty and ‘what ifs’, I’m even more thankful for the support of our donors. Your generosity helps PRHC maintain the highest level of patient care while we plan for the future. Your hospital has been there for people in our community throughout the pandemic. I have no doubt we’ll come out the other side of it, stronger than ever, because of you. Together, we’ll move beyond the ‘what ifs’ into a brand new era of healthcare, right here at PRHC. Thank you for your continued support and I wish you the best in the New Year.”
Best wishes for a happy and healthy holiday!
Because of your wonderful generosity, PRHC Foundation is able to fund the advanced equipment PRHC’s doctors, nurses and staff need to provide world-class care close to home for patients from all across our region. PRHC has been supported by a tradition of philanthropy since its beginning. Now, a generous community member has stepped forward to honour that tradition and inspire others by making the largest donation in PRHC Foundation history: A $5 million commitment to PRHC’s Cardiac Centre of Excellence from donor Jim Neill.
Mr. Neill’s gift will have a transformational impact on patient care now and in the future, explains Dr. Warren Ball, PRHC Interventional Cardiologist & Head of Division, Cardiology. “This gift will help keep our hearts here today by investing in significantly improved technology,” he says, “and when you add state-of-the-art technology to our exceptional patient care, his investment will empower us to pursue our vision for tomorrow.”
Dr. Ball continues, “While the planning for this exciting opportunity is in the early stages, we’re committed to ensuring our patients have access to the finest, most comprehensive cardiac care available, right here at PRHC.”
Lesley Heighway, PRHC Foundation President & CEO, agrees. “As Dr. Ball said, our hospital has exciting plans for the future of cardiac care. It will take the collective support of donors to stoke the flames of innovation,” says Lesley, “but it takes the support of a visionary leader to ignite the spark. Mr. Neill’s incredible $5 million investment in cardiac care will do just that. We’re so grateful for his gift.”
For a time, Mr. Neill was based in Toronto where he lived minutes from multiple hospitals. He realized the significance of having a world-class Health Centre to serve a regional population when he moved back to the Peterborough area.
“I really appreciated how different it is here,” he says, “but you need the same care. I wanted to be part of that process of providing very timely cardiac care close to home. And they’ve got such great plans for the future, I thought I could make a contribution and be part of that.”
Inspiring others to join him in contributing to the healthcare of the region – no matter the size of the donation – is also a major consideration for Mr. Neill. “I hope that my donation will encourage and inspire others, as donors who have come before have inspired me,” he says.

The charitable opportunity with appreciated stocks
When it comes time to support your favourite charities, do you instinctively reach for your chequebook or cash? Instead, consider the stocks in your portfolio that have generated substantial gains over the past few years.
Here are three great reasons that a stock donation may be right for you:
1. You can reduce capital gains.
Many investors have stocks they love and that have appreciated over many years. This sets the stage for capital gains when you sell. By transferring the stock to charity, you are eliminating the capital gains tax. As well, you are eligible to deduct the full fair market value of the stock you donated from your income taxes.
2. You can give more by donating the stock than by selling it and donating the proceeds.
Since you’re avoiding the capital gains tax when you donate a security, your stock gift will go further and make an even bigger impact because 100% of the stock value will provide meaningful support to the charity. And you’ll be eligible to deduct the full fair market value of the donated stock from your income taxes.
3. You can donate stock to the PRHC Foundation without headaches.
Gifts of stock are easy to make. Consult your financial advisor to decide which investments make the most financial and philanthropic impact. Reach out to our office or download our simple one-page Transfer of Securities form. You may also wish to discuss your gift intention and areas of care that are meaningful to you and your family.
Now is a great time to talk with your advisor and the charity you have in mind. To be eligible for a charitable deduction for a tax year, donations of stock need to be received by the end of the calendar year.

Dave’s Walk for PRHC Cancer Care
Dave Graham has been so moved by his Peterborough Regional Health Centre care experience that he’s saying “thanks” and giving back to his community by dedicating his daily walks in support of the PRHC Foundation and Cancer Care at PRHC.
Dave’s original goal was to walk 735,000 steps by December 17th when he’s due to finish treatment, and raise $5,000 to help fund the state-of-the-art equipment and technology used by PRHC’s Cancer Care team to provide exceptional, compassionate care to patients from across the region.
But the response of our comunity has been so great, that Dave has already passed his $5,000 goal and he’s been inspired all over again! Dave has raised the bar and his new goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of his walk. Wow, thank you, Dave, and we wish you all the best!
You can follow Dave’s progress, send him a message of encouragement or donate online at his personal fundraising page.

While the majority of the province’s hospitals’ operating dollars flow from Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, funding for equipment and technology remains the responsibility of the community. Our hospital relies on the generosity of donors to ensure PRHC’s doctors, nurses and staff have the life-changing and lifesaving equipment they need.

Lions Club of Peterborough donates in support of world-class care!
Thank you, Lions Club of Peterborough, for supporting world-class care at your regional hospital! This wonderful donation of $1,600 from the Lions will help fund the equipment and technology that support the Cardiac Cath Lab and Paediatric Oncology at Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
Thanks to donors like the Lions, we can help ensure our families, friends, and neighbours can continue to get world-class cardiac care, right here in our community, when every second counts.
And it’s with the support from donors, that PRHC is home to a Paediatric Oncology Satellite Clinic in partnership with the Paediatric Oncology Group of Ontario (POGO) and SickKids Hospital. As a result, fewer children have to travel for lifesaving cancer treatment, helping ease the burden for patients and families.
PRHC Foundation President & CEO receives prestigious Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy designation
The Peterborough Regional Health Centre (PRHC) Foundation is pleased to announce that President & CEO Lesley Heighway has been awarded the designation of Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy in recognition of her fundraising leadership on behalf of Peterborough Regional Health Centre.
The Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) is an international professional organization dedicated to healthcare philanthropy. The Fellow of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (FAHP) is a designation bestowed on AHP members who have made significant contributions to the profession.
Candidates must meet rigorous criteria including: career success that has had a transformative effect on the organizations they’ve supported; demonstrated leadership, mentorship and community service; and a comprehensive knowledge of healthcare governance and philanthropy. Of AHP’s 4,500 members at more than 2,200 healthcare facilities around the world, only 2% of AHP members have received the FAHP designation, with Heighway one of three selected in 2021.
Linda Skilton, Chair, PRHC Foundation Board of Directors made the announcement on behalf of the Foundation, adding that the honour is not only prestigious but well-deserved.
“In Lesley’s ten years as President & CEO, she’s worked tirelessly with donors from across the region to fund the equipment and technology that form the foundation of world-class care at Peterborough Regional Health Centre,” said Skilton. “Her success is fueled by a passion for healthcare that has inspired $30 million in donations in the past five years alone.”
Skilton added, “As a champion of innovation, her strategic and visionary leadership has led to incredible advances in patient care, brought new, life-saving services to our region, and helped our hospital attract and retain some of the best and brightest in medicine. The Fellow of AHP designation is an extremely well-deserved recognition of her many achievements.”
Dr. Peter McLaughlin, PRHC President & CEO, has worked closely with Lesley during her tenure at the Foundation and says she is a trusted leader, recognized by the sector and community as an authority on best practices in philanthropy.
“Lesley is highly-regarded by the Foundation and PRHC boards, hospital staff and leadership, and our donors,” said McLaughlin. “Her record of fundraising success and the impact our Foundation’s donors have had and continue to have on patient care at PRHC speak volumes about her performance, integrity and professionalism.”
